The Ankle & Foot
The ankle and foot form a complex structure designed to provide stability, balance, and mobility for standing, walking, and running. They are made up of:
Bones: Tibia, Fibula, Talus, Calcaneus (heel), plus 26 bones in the foot and toes
Joints: Talocrural (ankle), subtalar, midfoot, metatarsophalangeal (toe) joints
Soft Tissue: Ligaments (supporting arches and ankle stability), tendons (Achilles, tibialis, peroneal, plantar fascia), and muscles that absorb shock and propel movement
Because they carry the entire body’s weight with each step, the ankle and foot are among the most frequently stressed areas of the body.
Common Causes of Ankle & Foot Problems
⚠️ Sprains or strains from twisting or rolling the ankle
⚠️ Plantar fasciitis (heel pain from irritated fascia)
⚠️ Achilles tendonitis or irritation
⚠️ Overuse injuries from running, walking, or standing long hours
⚠️ Flat feet, fallen arches, or poor biomechanics
⚠️ Arthritis, joint restrictions, or chronic instability
Prevention & Self-Care Measures
🌟 Wear supportive shoes appropriate for your activity
🌟 Replace worn-out footwear to maintain proper support
🌟 Stretch calves, Achilles tendon, and plantar fascia regularly
🌟 Strengthen foot and ankle stabilizers with balance and mobility exercises
🌟 Use orthotics or arch supports if recommended
🌟 Rest and recover after long periods of standing or activity
Course of Action
Mild: Rest, ice/heat, stretching, supportive footwear, activity modification
Moderate: Chiropractic adjustments, ankle/foot mobilization, soft tissue therapy, strengthening and balance training
Severe/Persistent: Further evaluation — may require imaging, bracing, referral, or co-management
